Why
Animal agriculture causes extensive harm to animals, humans, and the environment. As the only organization focusing on the roots of the problem — the psychology that drives people to support, rather than oppose, animal agriculture — Beyond Carnism is filling a critical niche in the animal advocacy movement.
And, through our Center for Effective Vegan Advocacy, we’re helping to build a more impactful, resilient, and powerful global vegan movement.
Profile
Beyond Carnism is a US-based, international organization dedicated to exposing and transforming carnism, the invisible belief system that conditions people to eat certain animals.
We believe that meaningful social change requires a two-pronged strategic approach, which entails weakening the oppressive system (carnism) and strengthening the system that challenges it (veganism). For this reason, all our programs are designed to decrease the power of carnism and increase the power of veganism, through awareness-raising and training.
We create innovative video campaigns about carnism (which have won awards and gone viral), and, through our Center for Effective Vegan Advocacy, we work to increase the impact of vegan advocacy worldwide and create a more unified and resilient vegan movement. We provide on-site and online trainings, organizational consulting, and leadership support at low to no cost, by highly experienced trainers.
Impact
- Beyond Carnism was established after the release of founding president Melanie Joy’s award-winning and bestselling Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows. Melanie has continued to write books that provide critical insights, new theory, and practical tools and help deepen and broaden the conversation about creating a more just and compassionate world for all beings.
- We create innovative videos that have won awards and gone viral, reaching millions of viewers.
- Through our Center for Effective Advocacy, we provided in-person trainings and organizational consulting across five continents and we’ve trained over 400 groups and we’re now building an online platform. We support vegans and vegan organizations to become more impactful, professionalized, and unified.
- We are committed to the principles of effective altruism, in that we employ evidence and reason to make choices that are as impactful as possible. We are also committed to diversity and inclusivity, and to practicing and promoting healthy relationality.
